Portrait Miniature of a Elisabeth of France Oils on Copper Tondo

SOLD

Code: 10273

This is a nice and original early 17th-century portrait miniature, dating to around 1620. It is superbly painted in oils with the portrait of a young lady, identifiable as Elisabeth of France. She is depicted wearing a cartwheel ruff and jeweled gown. In this portrait, she is shown as a Spanish Princess (of Asturias), after her marriage to King Philip IV of Spain. Thus her French name was changed to Isabel, known afterward as Isabel de Bourbon. The portrait is very well executed in oils on a strong copper tondo. Such a portrait would have been housed in a gold or silver frame, worn as a symbol of loyalty and devotion. It is mounted within a period silver gilt case, with gold brocade material insert.
