Large, Leaf Shaped Milliner's Iron

Code: K23337

SOLD

A late nineteenth century, brass and steel milliner's iron in the shape of a leaf. This type of iron was used for making ornamentation for hats from lace or felt. The fabric was washed and starched, then laid over the brass section. The steel section would be heated and then pushed into the brass section. The fabric would then be trimmed, leaving you with a lovely shaped leaf to adorn your hat. This example has a turned oak handle, is French and dates from c.1880. The metal collar, where the wooden handle meets the steel, is missing and the end of the wooden handle is worn and an area has been filled with wood filler.

Dimensions: Length 22cm. Width 7.3cm. Height (when the two parts are together) 5cm.
