Wedgwood majolica advertising tile
Dimensions:W: 12cm (4.7")H: 18cm (7.1")D: 2cm (0.8")
A really unusual pottery advertising tile. This piece is unmarked but it has to have been made by Wedgwood. It was possibly made as an advert and would have been set into the factory wall. It reads '1730 - 1795 JOSIAH WEDGWOOD & SONS. LTD ETRURIA POTTERS and TILE MAKERS' and was probably made to commemorate the centenary of Josiah Wedgwood's death in 1895. The design is very finely detailed. It is moulded into the tile which is then covered in a green, majolica glaze. This is a rare item and we have never seen anything quite like it before. There are a couple of chips to the base of the tile but other than that it is in good condition.
