Small Marble Mortar

SOLD

Code: E18144

A small, 19th century, marble mortar with a turned, wooden  pestle. The mortar is carved  from a whitish coloured marble which has a pale brown marbling through it. It is 18.5cm. across at the widest point by 9.5cm. deep, so this is quite a small example. The base of the mortar is marked ‘MANDON 1811’. I do not know what this relates to but it is 19th century, so the number could be the date that it was made. The pestle is turned from either walnut or chestnut, and it has a beautiful patina. It is 18.5 cm long. There are a couple of splits in the pestle, where the wood has dried out with age, but other than that the piece is in very good condition.
Price includes postage within the U.K. Shipping to the U.S.A. add £25.  Western Europe add £10.
